Ceramic filter process
In general, the smaller the pore size of a filter and the more complex the path through which water passes through the filter medium, the more effective it is in separating particles from water. Ceramic material has a small and complex pore structure, making it an ideal filter medium. The pore structure of Doulton® and British Berkefeld® ceramic drinking water filters is finely controlled. This expertise gives the filters the pore structure required to filter a wide range of water source pollutants throughout the life of the filter. To understand the size of the pores smaller than 1 micron, it is enough to know that the width of a human hair is 100 microns. Doulton® and British Berkefeld® water filters have been continuously produced in England for over 185 years. In the 19th century, the Thames River was the main water source of London but also served as a sewer. Henry Doulton® discovered that filtering water through a porous ceramic could prevent people from getting sick from cholera and other waterborne diseases. Fairey Industrial Ceramics Limited (FICL) is the sole producer of the world-renowned Doulton® and British Berkefeld® ceramic drinking water filters. All ceramic water filter products are manufactured at FICL's factory in North Staffordshire, England, the traditional ceramic industry region of England.
All stages of FICL's drinking water filter production process comply with strict BS EN ISO 9001 quality standards. FICL's drinking water filters have NSF and WRAS certifications, the highest international testing standards.
Our high-quality standards are the reason why Doulton® and British Berkefeld® brands are sought after worldwide in household water filtration systems.
180 years ago, the company named the first ceramic filter that mechanically cleansed particles in water up to 0.5 microns with a simple ceramic filter Sterasyl. Over the years, as our water filtration needs changed, this ceramic filter was technologically developed to adapt to our current needs by adding silver ions, activated carbon granules (Super Sterasyl), heavy metals (Ultra Sterasyl), and fluoride (Ultra Fluoride Sterasyl) cleaning properties.
